You are bidding on a very rare and 100% original - authentic - genuine 171 Year Old handcolored antique map of the above region from one of the rarest and sought after atlases of the 19th centrury - the 1835/1836 edition of the Universal Atlas by Dave H. Burr. Maps from this atlas rarely come up for auction due to the rarity of the atlas itself. It is one of the most sought after and rare atlases - period. Maps from this atlas sell for hundreds and thousands of dollars and that is if you can even find a map from this atlas. The reason that I know this is that I have already searched for these maps and can only find about 5 originals for sale out of this atlas worldwide!! I am going to be listing about 50 maps from this atlas, so please review my other auctions. The US state maps alone are great investments. If you win this map, you may be the only private collector in your state or region to own such a map. That is how rare these maps are. David Burr's Universal Atlas was perhaps the most elegant American commercially published atlas of its time, utilizing wonderful wash colors and elegant engraving style. Burr studied under Simeon DeWitt in New York. His first atlas was an Atlas of New York State, the second state atlas to be issued in the US (after Mills Atlas of South Carolina in 1826). In the 1830s, he served as topographer for the US Post Office, producing a series of rare and highly sought after large format state maps during this period. Later, he was appointed as the Geographer of the House of Representatives, w he served during the later part of the 1830s. David Burr is widely regarded as one of the most important names in American Cartographic history. I cannot stress enough how beautiful these maps are up close compared to the photos that you see. Note that the photos do not do the map justice. These are truly incredible maps to behold!! General Description: 1.Strikingly interesting and highly detailed map. The map depicts in great detail all of the geographical information known at the time the map was published. Depending on the map in the listing, note that many geographical details have changed since the map was published and were not accurate compared to today's modern maps!! Map details include individual towns, rivers, lakes, bays, harbors, islands, mountains, forests, roads and other important places as shown on the map in this listing. All of the handcoloring is original as issued in the atlas. 2. The map is in excellent condition considering the age of the map. The overall size of the map sheet is approximately 15 inches by 20 inches. 3. The map is a 100% orignal and genuine antique map. I will also send you a copy of the title page as proof of authenticity for your records. 4. Full retail prices of the maps from this atlas are in the hundreds and hundreds of dollars . The starting price for this map is far, far lower than the full retail price. These individual maps rarely come up fo auction and if they do then not at a low price like this. Again, own a map from one of the rarest atlases ever produced in the world for this low price!!! All of my maps are investment grade and collectible quality. The value of this original will only increase over time. Many people are now starting to offer cheap reproductions/copies.
