I just purchased some more Fine and Rare Old estate Books this past week, including a number of Old Books owned by noted Kingston, NY citizens CORNELIUS D. WESTBROOK D.D. (1782-1858) and MARIUS SCHOONMAKER (1811-1894: U.S. Whig Rep. from N.Y. 1851-53) as well as relatives of the same. Some interesting books in the collection including a First Edition Memoirs of Aaron Burr with Signature Note of Aaron Burr attached to Frontispiece Page and other nice Early American Books as well. I will be listing these over the next week or two as time permits. Here is a Great ORIGINAL 1836 HANDWRITTEN SERMON NOTEBOOK of CORNELIUS D. WESTBROOK, D.D. filled with 121 HANDWRITTEN SERMONS AND STUDY NOTES WRITTEN IN THE YEAR 1836 in NEW YORK. His name written inside front cover. Book is 6-1/2" x 4-1/4". Very interesting Sermon subject matters with some corrections in text. Scripture subjects seem to be taken mostly from the first chapters of Genesis. I just quickly skimmed through a few of the pages of writing and found sermon subjects discussed such as THE CREATION; THE STUDY OF MAN, where he critiques the "new system...of the human mind..PHRENOLOGY"; THE 5 SUBDIVISIONS OF THE HUMAN FAMILY including "THE NEGRO" and "AMERICAN"; THE SABBATH; THE THEOLOGICAL PROBLEM OF EVIL; etc... Very scholarly works. I see about half of the sermons are dated. The earliest dated "January 3, 1836" to latest dated "New York, Feb. 14, 1836". These may be, then, his very first sermons preached when he took over the Pastorate at Courtlandtown and Peekskill, NY churches in 1836. CORNELIUS D. WESTBROOK D.D. (1782-1858) was a graduate of Kingston Academy and Union College (1801). He served as Chaplain in the War of 1812 (his father, Gen. Frederick Westbrook was an officer in both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812). He was Paster of the Dutch Reformed Church in Fishkill, NY until 1830. His became Pastor of the Courtlandtown and Peekskill, NY churches from 1836 until 1850. Afterwards making his residence in Kingston, NY until his death. It was noted about his preaching "As a religious teacher, Dr. Westbrook had qualities that made his utterances striking and impressive, especially to thoughtful hearers. He was not a popular preacher as this phrase is commonly understood; but no sober-minded, intelligent person could hear him without interest, and without feeling that an original, acute, and powerful mind prompted the words with which he sought to enlighten and persuade. His originality was marked, pervading his whole character, and showing itself as well in speech and manner as in thought. He did not and could not follow in the track beaten hard by the feet of others, but struck out boldly into paths which his quick vision pointed out...He was not only an independent thinker himself, but taught and stimulated others to do likewise,- to take large views of the Maker and Lawgiver, of His Works and Word,- and in this light to do, with honest hearts and all their might, what their hand found to do for the glory of God and welfare of men.." (from "History of Ulster County, New York.." 1880. note: I will include a 5-page excerp of his bio-sketch from this history with book for you). Almost all of the pages in book are full of writing. Some pages are written in very small and compressed writing, and some with larger writing. All written by Cornelius however. Some of the writing in pages is a bit difficult to read and takes some effort to decifer his handwriting. Some pages are easier to read. The last 10 leaves in book are written from the back of the book forwards and so is upsidedown to majority of leaves in book. Some of the writing on these last pages are written in what looks like Latin and some in English. They are all in Cornelius' handwriting as well however. On rear endpaper is written in pencil "Married 25 Feb. 1838 Caleb Lent & Elmeda Crampton". I assume this is Cornelius' note that he married them on that date. Both covers on book are separated from binding. The old leather on spine is dry and deteriorated. The first two...
