Postal History Historic and tremendous content in this 2 page stampless folded letter penned September 9, 1836 by Sylvester Welch in Louisville, Kentucky and sent to his wife Sarah Welch in Frankfort, KY. Letter header is GALTHOUSE, Louisville.... this of course is the original Galt House hotel that was errected in 1835 (a modern version of which still stands today along the Ohio River.... where famous people like Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln stayed....) Welch describes his stagecoach journey from Frankfort to Louisville, how they saw many emigrants camping beside the road, sleeping in tents, some in covered wagons, their wagons & horses "these people came as far as this place, and put their families, wagons and horses, and whatever else they had with them, on a steam boat or some other floating thing, and put off down the Ohio for some country in the west of south. The slave owner goes to Missouri or Mississippi and the man who is poor to own slaves goes to Indiana or Illinois....." He goes on to say they inspected the Louisville and Portland Canal and the "current manufactory..." they saw several boats passing through the locks, some steam and some flatboat. The evening before they celebrated Mrs. Knight walk and sing in her sleep with her night dress on. The pople said she sung well and played well but the play was opera and didn't please him.... He says there was a fight too! After breakfast he says they hired a coach and crossed over to Jeffersonville, Indiana "and proceeded there down the right bank of the Ohio river to New Albany a distance of about six miles we recrossed the river then to Portland on the Kentucky side. A miserable looking place with a vile set of (?) and prostitutes. From Portland to this place is about two miles. Jeffersonville is but a small village and has but little trade. New Albany is laid out for a large town and the buildings scattered over a wide space. I suppose the Hoosier's wish is to rival Louisivlle. If they can make a grand canal or other improvement around the face which will supersede th concern at Louisville, they may have a chance...." He says tomorrow they go on to Port William and then return to Frankfort. He promises to buy gifts !. Enlarged scans provided for your research benefit.
