PRINTED & Handcolored In 1 837. 1837 CUVIER ANTIQUE PRINT: TESTUDO TURTLE: EMYS, CHELYS, TRYONIX. PLATE 2. FROM: The Animal Kingdom, Arranged According to its Organization and an Introduction to Comparative Anatomy by Baron George Cuvier, With Figures Designed after Nature. London, G. Henderson: 1834-1837. An immensely influential scientist, Baron Cuvier is best known for firmly cementing the idea of species extinction as scientific fact. His rigorous application of a modified Linnaeun taxonomy to all critters allowed him to classify all life into four categories or Phyla. Although Cuvier had a deep dislike for any 'popularization of science', it is obvious that his illustrated works must have introduced the masses to the spectacular diversity of life.
