Very rare, original, 1837 fully Manuscript Slavery Document from the City of Washington in the District of Columbia being a Bill of Sale for certain properties including a "chestnut mare, (named) Jemima Wilkinson and her yearling colt by (?), my negro boys Dallas and William and my negro girl Mars, and the barouche (a type of fashionable carriage) and harness” - apparently the mare had a last name while the slave children did not!! This business like and matter-of-fact, Slave Bill of Sale Document is written on a four page, folded letter sheet containing 4 pages each measuring approx. 7 7/8" x 9 7/8". It was executed between the seller - Jacob Dixon - and the buyer - Thomas Cookendorfer - in consideration of the sum of $650.00. The Bill of Sale is dated April 4th, 1837 and appears to have been written by a third party and signed by Dixon with “his mark”. The Document reads in part: "Know all men by these presents that I, Jacob Dixon of the city of Washington in consideration that Thomas Cookendorfer hath this day endorsed my note drawn for the sum of six hundred and fifty dollars payable on the first of July 1838.... do give, grant, bargain and sell unto the said Thomas Cookendorfer the following property - My chestnut mare Jemima Wilkinson and her yearling colt by (?), my negro boys Dallas and William and my negro girl Mars and read more
