1839: Old Houses in Hamburg, French Artist, Signed This is a beautifully rendered architectural drawing, in pencil, showing some 16th century houses in the old town of Hamburg, as they appeared in the early 19th century. The drawing is dated June 6, 1839, annotated in French, and initaled "G. Des." or perhaps "A.Des" I make a tentative attribution to the French artist Guillaume Désiré J. DESCAMPS (1779-1858), who was born in Lille. I find, on the web, a very detailed architectural inkwash, also with annotations in French upper right, made by Descamps when he was working in Italy. So this lovely Hamburg study may be by him. Dimensions are about 11 inches by 8.5 inches, tipped onto a slightly larger sheet of paper..Condition is quite good and fresh appearing. A very good work, witness to a bygone era in the history of Hamburg, and a continuing pleasure to contemplate. Give yourself a New Year's present. Shipping within the U.S. will be $6.
