Wow - what an amazing find here.... this detailed 3+ page stampless folded letter was written by a missionary wife (last name LAURENCE) in Dindigul (southern INDIA) - letter written August 29, 1839 !!! - and sent to Mrs. Anna Kennedy, Mrs. E Woods & MC. Vandergrift - in St Georges, Delaware, USA. The letter contains a forwarding manuscript notation " Forwarded from St. Helena by U. States Consular Agent...." This is a RARE transit manuscript from St Helena !! The writer talks about their work in India, referencing Ceylon, conversions, compares life of women in India to lives of women back home, describes how she spends her time reading and studying the Bible, their travels etc etc..... MUCH to read and study in this incredible letter !! Many references to "bretheren" and rather formal religious talk. Full size scans provided for your research benefit. I didn't spend much time researching so more study should reward you. A word on condition. Unfortunately, this letter contained old tape - which was removed leaving old stains. It has some archival tape repair, but is fully intact. It also contains a NEW BEFORD, Ms (Massachusetts) red circular date stamp and SHIP marking in red (New Bedford was the port of arrival) and then 25 cents manuscript rate was applied for the journey to Delaware.
