Postal History Historic content and a scarce cancel on this detailed 3+ page stampless folded letter written January 29, 1834 by Mary Ann (Mgells ?) in Monson, Massachusetts and sent to her aunt Mrs. Esther Abbott in care of Captain William Russell in Providence, Rhode Island. This is a deeply religious letter, extensively cover the abolition topic, anti slavery and the repatriation of American slaves to Liberia, West Africa! "Whether the blacks are free or later citizens of this country or sent to Liberia makes but little difference to them, that is generally; there are exceptions. To the north of us in Utica & Whitesboroug a good deal of interest is felt and in Peterboro a mannel labour school is to be opened in the spring for young men of colour...." Enlarged scans provided for your research benefit. This is a fascinating and historic letter - and more study will no doubt reward you. Postmark is a beautiful and scarce MONSON, Mass in black fancy scroll with a PAID in scroll and manuscript 10 cent rate mark. Letter has a bit of archival tape repair but is fully intact and in good shape. Red wax seal remains for a nice touch. Dealer asking price on this letter was $200.
