Antique Birch Bark pantry box bottom or measure with extensive wooden peg construction, thick pine wood bottom board and retaining it original old dry and attic soiled surface, as found. Maine , 1840's, probably earlier. Guaranteed old and original; this is not a fake or reproduction. Actual weight 1 lbs. 8 3/4" bottom diameter by 6" tall. Antique Birch Bark pantry box bottom or measure with extensive wooden peg construction, thick pine wood bottom board and retaining it original old dry and attic soiled surface, as found. This is old and wonderful. The lure and the legacy of birch bark and birch bark construction has so permeated the antiquarian interest that a whole new market of new birch bark construction now flourishes, collectors contest for superior Native American made objects and "Adirondack Style" decorative antiques are vended by single theme dealers. In this shuffle of new appreciation, the true old Maine farm birch bark constructed object has yet to have it's day. This measure or pantry box style bottom is a worthy example of this school of birch bark art. The Indian influence on the rural Maine farm settlement bequeathed birch bark as a wood craft gift. Never fully embraced, Maine men did, mostly by chance, turn their craft hand to birch bark occasionally and made simple objects to do simple tasks. Their craft never flourished and the products were simple and crudely made for they did not have the natural and generational craft ability with the bark that the Indians had. Also they never made enough objects to become truly skilled at crafting with the bark. Again this offering is a perfect example these traits. A full birch bark side, turned in-side-out, as the Indians did, is gatd into a round and pegged with many hand made wooden pegs. The join is rudimentary, the pegs are crude and awkward and the peg work is crude and awkward too. This pegging and crude work continues to the base (which is an unusually thick pine board) having peg work that matches the crude bark seam above. We found no lid. Did it have a lid? T is no sign of wear or an lid age tone line at the top of the bark. It could have been always an open top measure style round box. The bark at the top has warped into an oval long ago. Our gut feeling is that what we found is what was made; a one time birch bark round open top box made one day quickly for light domestic use. They made this and made no more. It was used for a while and then got tossed into the old attic long, long ago, probably before the Civil War. The box and it's make date from the early settlement era when materials and time allowed for a chance production. By the 1850's, the farms could trade for "modern made" things and this sort of farm made object began to vanish. The first to go were the odd items such as this round box. This is a very scarce and crude birch bark primitive with a great old attic found surface. Very good as found condition considering that it's a pantry box style birch bark box with no lid. A little warped at the top but this is appropriated to it's crude make and age. T are some minor mouse nibbles around the bottom edge. These are not detractive and are actually sort of nice. It has a superior old untouched surface and absolute old attic soiling, as found. If one wants the real thing, this is it. Please see photographs. It is in wonderful original untouched condition. Right out of the old attic crawl space it has appropriate surface oxidation and soiling for it's age and from it's old farm residence. Please see photographs. As found last August in a farm near Montville , Maine . Seeking things fresh found in attics? Please see our other listings from this estate. This was in the crawl space attic above the oldest section of the homestead. We have done nothing to it at all; it is just as we found it. It looks like good one to us! We offer this early & crude birch bark pantry box bottom or measure for $4.99 NR..
