U.S. MODEL 1840 NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS SWORD- Roby 1865 - The NCO sword was an issued weapon for NCOs and standard bearers, from the 1840's into the early 20th century. Double counterguard brass hilt with textured 'false wire bound' grip has achieved a subdued yellow patina. The 32 inch single edge, straight blade is in excellent condition with most of the original bright polished finish, with some extremely light tarnished spots that are dull gray against the polished steel. No nicks or sharpening on the blade. Sharp markings on the ricasso C. ROBY, W. CHELMSFORD, MASS and on other side U.S. 1865 A.G.M. A.G.M. (Army Inspector Alfred G. Manning) also appears on the guard. Sword is as straight as an arrow with no warping and all components tightly fixed together. Scabbard has two problems: 1) Black electrical tape binds together a severe bend at mid-length; 2) Drag is completely severed. There are restoration services extant which can use the original brass fittings on a replacement leather sheath for a very professional look - ask me if you need a reference. Handsome representative example of a U.S. issued NCO sword, especially with the scabbard leather restored. NO RESERVE! Shipping is a flat $12 in the USA, international per invoice.
