Antique small handmade & hand carved wooden ox yoke for young oxen in training and generally used by children to train them, with it's original and splendid old red paint, it's original old bows with the same old red paint, it's original iron hardware but lacking it's bow plugs and retaining it's original old, dry and lightly barn soiled surface, as found. . Maine , 1840, possibly earlier. Guaranteed old and original; this is not a fake or reproduction. Actual weight 7 3/4 lbs. Small size : 33 1/2" long by 14" tall including the bows by 3 3/4" thick. This is a GREAT small size ox yoke! It is a wonderful size for decorative space commitment and in superb original condition with a delightful original old red paint and untouched surface. These small yokes were used to train young oxen and this task (though not considered to be a task) was usually delegated to the children of the farm. It took years. As the ox team grew, larger and larger yokes were made. This is the smallest starter yokeâe¦ in outstanding original condition. If one has had an eye out for a yoke but size and space commitment has been a concern, this is the solution. The fantastic small size of this yoke means it may be hung is such a small space as aâe¦ bathroom wall. But don't waste it t This set, with the old red and the old red bows is PERFECTâe¦ ANYW and EVERYONE will LIKE IT. And it has the right story. This training of the oxen with this yoke by children raised some remarkably pleasant tempered farm companions who, from their youthâe¦ learned a stoic patience and steady pace that made the young oxen family members as opposed to beasts of burden. That carried through their adulthood, for decades. This yoke, an early handmade yoke, shows the growth of the oxen with the second set of yoke bow holes made as they grew slightly bigger. After that increase, it was new yoke time because oxen grow sideways too and this yoke got a little tight for two. Generally a yoke like this served one pair of young oxen once. Maybe two pair over two decades but most likely one Maine farm children raised one pair of loyal farm oxen using this yoke once. That explains the fine condition of this yoke. Used young, used once and then forever stored in the barn the yoke is in wonderful condition. It has fine usage wear and patina, notably on the rear side, the rub-against-the-neck side, w the surface is oxen sweat darkened. The old red painted surface is a single original coat with fine wear and rich color. Once a standard of Maine farm youth, one rarely encounters the single most important piece of equipment used by children to train young oxen. This training took years, in fact most of the children's youth and this yoke was the first one rendered obsolete in that training. We don't find these small ones in this select condition so don't miss out. Very good as found condition. T is nothing wrong with the ox yoke except the minor wear & tear of use and time. One bow has it's original old at-the-bend splitting. This was in-the-making. The bow plugs, usually wedges of hard leather or whittled wood are missing and long gone. As these were, in fact, "plugs", they are usually lacking. For the photographs, we inserted an old square nail in each bow plug hole. As the photographs show, these work and look fine. We will include these nails and, additionally, the large square nail we used to hang the bow in the photographs too for the buyer. The nails are inserted and rest on the yoke holding the bows in place. They work great. The ox yoke, with it's original bows, is in absolutely untouched, fine and as found condition.
