Antique handmade cut, bent and soldered sheet iron tin and hand painted with it's original tole decoration rectangular canted side bread, bun or biscuit tray with rolled handles at the ends retaining it's original old dry surface as found. New England , probably Maine , 1840's, possibly earlier. Guaranteed old and original; this is not a fake or reproduction. Actual weight 1/2 lbs. 11 ¾" long by 7 ¾" wide by 1 ¾" deep at the handle ends. Antique handmade cut, bent and soldered sheet iron tin and hand painted with it's original tole decoration rectangular canted side bread, bun or biscuit tray with rolled handles at the ends retaining it's original old dry surface as found. We found this in the garden shed attached to the barn. It had been t a long time. Hardly a storage place for preservation, the tray has survived by simply being stored, unused, high and dry. Probably, after an initial trial, the odd shape proved awkward as a saucer for a potted plant so on to the top shelf it went and never came off until we retrieved it. What caught our eye... and still holds it... is the decoration. Beautiful free hand red oak leaves with black highlights and white back ground. Pure, simple and... the fall season. The remains of a yellow band is at the edge of the bottom but... it is the red leaves on white that are our delight. It's an unusually simple yet very true tole paint decoration. It's probably Maine . It would be just the theme for a morning of painting in the first weeks of November; a wind blown oak leaf, the last to fall and a light dusting of snow, the first to fall. Additionally, the tray form is a classic form but not encountered by us very often. This, too, adds charm, particularly the rolled handles. A sliced loaf of fresh & still warm bread placed in this tray on the dining table would be irresistible. Again; the red leaves on the white ground are the nicest seasonal expression of tole decoration we've encountered in a while. Good as found condition. To the collector of early American tole decoration, the decoration on this bread tray is worn. To those who would prefer the soul of actual usage expressed as old surface, this bread tray is a splendid example. The form is wonderful. The old surface a delight. The decoration splendid. Aside from the natural usage wear to the paint, the bread tray has no damage. It is totally untouched as found and has the obvious & typical paint decoration loss, age toning, minor surface abrasions, scratches and edge wear. The whole is lightly soiled. Right out of the garden shed, it has appropriate surface oxidation, wear and soiling for it's age and from it's old Maine estate residence. Please see photographs. As found this past March in an estate in Black Point , Maine . Seeking things fresh found in attics? Please see our other listings from this estate. This was in the garden shed. We have done nothing to it at all; it is just as we found it. It looks like good one to us! We offer this old tole decorated tin bread tray for $4.99 NR..
