c.1840 RARE Transferware Tureen CHINESE JUVENILE SPORTS Description Very hard to find Staffordshire 19th century small footed tureen with lid and underplate from the "Chinese Juvenile Sports" series by Thomas Barlow. Each piece features a different scene. The underplate shows a boy playing with a toy horse while another figure plays a trumpet. The tureen depicts a boy crawling on his hands and knees while someone appears to be pouring water onto his head from a vessel. The lid shows a figure feeding a bird and two other figures appear to be sitting beneath a tree. All of the pieces have beautiful floral borders. The tureen and underplate are both marked "Chinese Juvenile Sports" as shown. The lid is unmarked. The assembled piece measures approximately 8 inches across by 5.75 inches high including the lid and underplate. The condition is very good. No chips or cracks. T are some minor rough spots and a few areas of glaze wear - the worst one is on the handle of the underplate and I have included a close-up photo (it's really not bad). T is an old repair to one of the handles of the tureen. This old and rare piece of transferware displays beautifully as you can see. See photos for details .
