Antique handmade cut, bent, soldered and japanned sheet iron tin forming a small whale oil "Petticoat" hand lamp with it's original burner, fuel cap, finger ring, tin candlestick peg and retaining a pleasingly well preserved original old dry japanned surface. New England , 1840, probably earlier. Guaranteed old and original; this is not a fake or reproduction. Actual weight 1/4 lbs. 2 1/2" diameter at the widest point of the font by 4 1/4" tall. SMALL SIZE and REMARKABLE ORIGINAL CONDITION of the japanning sets this apart right away. This is a whale oil lighting classic; the popularly titled "Petticoat" lamp. It is so named for the skirt at the base of the lamp that conceals a tapered tin peg. This skirt allow the small hand lamp to be sat down without fear of overturning.
