Antique handmade cut, bent, soldered and japanned sheet iron tin forming a small whale oil "Petticoat" hand lamp with it's original burner, fuel cap, finger ring, tin candlestick peg and retaining a pleasingly well preserved original old dry japanned surface. New England , 1840, probably earlier. Guaranteed old and original; this is not a fake or reproduction. Actual weight 1/4 lbs. 2 1/2" diameter at the widest point of the font by 4 1/4" tall. Antique handmade cut, bent, soldered and japanned sheet iron tin forming a small whale oil "Petticoat" hand lamp with it's original burner, fuel cap, finger ring, tin candlestick peg and retaining a pleasingly well preserved original old dry japanned surface. See Hayward : COLONIAL LIGHTING Plate 17, #402 with descriptive text on pg. 33. Finding an old jewel like this is just a pleasure! We found this loose in the attic. SMALL SIZE and REMARKABLE ORIGINAL CONDITION of the japanning sets this apart right away. This is a whale oil lighting classic; the popularly titled "Petticoat" lamp. It is so named for the skirt at the base of the lamp that conceals a tapered tin peg. This skirt allow the small hand lamp to be sat down without fear of overturning. The concealed peg is to allow the lamp to be mounted in a candlestick like a peg lamp. We have photographed this lamp pegged into a candlestick in several of the photographs. Both ways, the lamp performed well and was a very popular lamp in it's day. The hobgoblin of filling the lamp through it's tiny portal was another matter. Two steady hands were needed to "not make a mess". It is interesting to inspect the inside of this portal for the un-japanned tin & font seam are visible and these show the actual skill & dexterity needed to hand make this little lamp. A lot of hidden work went into this tiny production but their evident popularity made this extra effort possible. Very good as found condition. Aside from light and appropriate usage wear to the japanning, a very slight bump to one side of the skirt, normal and lightest surface oxidation to the tin & japanning and lightest estate soiling, the tiny "Petticoat" whale oil lamp is in fine original condition. Please see photographs. As found last August in an attic of a Montville , Maine estate. Seeking things fresh found in attics? Please see our other listings from this estate. This was in the attic. We have done nothing to it at all; it is just as we found it. It looks like good one to us! We offer this scarce early japanned tin "Petticoat" whale oil hand lamp for $4.99 NR.
