This is an excellent Victorian era ladies sewing box in, all original & clean, intact condition. Sewing box is circa 1840, carved in India for the English market during the reign of Queen Victoria. Box is sandalwood with carved animals & flowers on surfaces, has inlaid trim on exterior & footed base. This rare box also has handles on the side, hinged lid & fitted interior with several compartments to hold thread, needles, etc. The tops to the various compartments are also highly carved & it includes carved bone (I) components inside. The tray lifts out for extra storage underneath, has velvet lined interior & bottom of box. The lid has a removable mirror which has an 1837 insurance policy glued on backside. Exceptional quality & workmanship, antique box is 13 ½âe x 9 ½âe x 5 ½âe, shows no excessive wear or damages, little bit of corner wear on lid.
