Antique SMALL handmade & homemade pine wood flat top lift lid keepsake or dresser box with it's original birdseye veneer decoration on the outside, it's original blue paper paste down bottom interior liner, its original hinges, lock and front lock plate in fine original condition but having a lightly estate soiled interior and retaining it's original old & bright shellacked surface and lightest estate soiling, as found. We found the two small keepsake or dresser boxes we are listing today in one of the upstairs bedrooms with the marble lot we have also listed today inside them. They are both wonderful small Maine farm boxes and both are in superb original condition. This box is from the same maker's hand as the rosewood paint decorated box we have listed. The formal finish concealing the country fabrication, the similar lock plate, the same attention to make, the hinges and lock andâe¦ the two boxes being found togetherâe¦ pretty well assures that the same Maine farm maker made the two. This one is a touch more primitive for the pine wood is rough cut with an unfinished surface on the interior. The inside bottom is blue paper lined to accommodate this rough wood while the exterior birdseye veneer hide it completely on the outside. This rough pine wood usage is a give away for "homemade" and that is affirmed with a small design flaw. The lid, when opened, will not fold all the way back for the maker forgot to factor in the thickness of the veneer when mounting the hinges. Fine and all is well for no one has forced the lid back but, again, this factor with the rough pine proves the "handmade and HOMEMADE on a Maine farm". Outside, the appearance of the box is PURE DELIGHT. A beautiful OLD yet BRIGHT shellac surface highlights the birdseye veneer while the small size and formal appearance combine to allow "adorable" and "charming" to be used for the little cutie is never at all pretentious. Sitting with it's old marbles for a century, the box has a light surface mildew and soiling to the interior that will easily cleaned out. THEN one may say that should one be seeking an authentic early New England birdseye veneer dresser box, this is a special prize for one's watch and other personal jewelry will delight to spend the night safely inside this box. Although traditional Maine pine wood at it's core, the box has been crafted to a particularly refined mid-19th century eleganceâe¦ and with a particularly bright original shellac surface. Very good as found condition. Aside from the inner estate soiling noted above and lightest original age toning and dust soiling to the top of the box, as t should be, the box is in perfect original condition , as found. Right out of the bedroom and untouched, as found, it is a wonderful small birdseye maple dresser or keepsake box. Please see photographs. As found last August in an estate in Montville , Maine .
