Well, this one I pulled out of the closet for a very good reason. My daughter's Sweet 16 is coming up next week, and this beauty is up for grabs !! This Antique Umbrella is up for grabs, and a lovely piece it is. I'm not familiar with the anatomy of an umbrella, so I'll do my best. I will try to do more research and add more info later tonight. 1840's S.Kirk & Son Silver Reposse' Umbrella Handle Umbrella made and marked by William Beehler - 1st American Umbrella Factory in Baltimore, Maryland (my hometown !!) Marked - 925/1000, Also marked S.Kirk & Son This wonderful antique umbrella has definately had it's use. T is obvious wear from use, and wear on markings as well. Bakelite tips are on the end of each "post". Bakelite tip (top of umbrella) is chipped. Silk cover is tattered and needs replacing. I will be adding more photos and details later, so, keep a watch on it !! Thanks for looking and happy bidding. Any questions, feel free to email me. William Beehler - 1st American Umbrella Factory started in 1828 in Baltimore Samuel Kirk was partners with Henry Child Kirk in Baltimore from 1846 to 1861, and was thus called S.Kirk & Son Wow !! Well as I said, I would add more information and Photos, I was hoping to do so before a bid was placed, but did not have time. I hope these pictures are more clear for you. Hopefully, you could see in my first photos, on the Ball of the Handle, t is a monogram, with letters MLR. I know from research, Samuel Kirk and the Roosevelt family were close friends. So, it's possible this umbrella belonged to a Roosevelt, and very possible that it's one of the very few he made. Also learned that Kirk did not make many Umbrella handles, so this one is considered a rarity. He did however, custom make special gifts for those in his life, and his closest friends. So, it has been standing in my closet ever since for several years and I could not part with it, but with a special occassion coming very soon, I'm willing to let it go. This is not an umbrella that would have been carried for a long period of time, the handle is rather heavy. I believe the handle is Solid Silver, with only the insert being hollowed for the rod. So, beyond the rod, it's Solid. I will try to get the weight and add that later today. ***The handle measures 7". Again, this was made by the First American Umbrella Factory located in Baltimore and it still in working order !! The "push" does go up, and the umbrella canopy extends, however, the silk (I believe) is in disrepair. Remember it is over 150 years old. T is one "cross bar" that needs fixing (not replacing), it looks like it could be fixed. I can't think of any other details to add, please feel free to email me with any questions, and I will try to help. Thanks again for looking and happy bidding.
