Antique handmade cut, bent and soldered sheet iron tin TINY flat top document box with it's original vibrant red paint and gold floral stenciled decoration on the lid top in exceptionally well preserved condition and retaining it's original old dry surface as found. New England , probably Maine , 1840's. Guaranteed old and original; this is not a fake or reproduction. Actual weight 1/4 lbs. 3" wide by 1 3/4" tall by 2 1/8" deep. We found this in a dresser drawer in a bedroom of the Victorian addition to the main house. Once this was a daughter's bedroom but had been a little used guest bedroom for over a century. "Guests" did not stay long and were rarely invited to the homestead I was told by the elder neighbor who became my personal council during the clean out once he discerned I would make him do no actual work. He said "She didn't like 'em to HANG ON in her summer. COURSE they wood-ANT stay to WINTER." So the dresser in the bedroom that might have been her grandmother's 1850 "transitional" Empire-Victorian style "4 drawer" of "thick old mahogany ven-NEER" was pretty
