Antique handmade sheet iron tin & hand painted with it's original tole decoration domed top document box retaining it's original old dry surface as found. New England , probably Maine , 1840's. Guaranteed old and original; this is not a fake or reproduction. Actual weight 3/4 lbs. 6 3/4" wide by 3 1/2" tall by 3 1/4" deep. Sheet iron tin cut, bent, soldered and hand painted with it's original tole decoration domed top document box retaining it's original old dry surface as found. This is a pleasing old Maine farm veteran tole document box of the classic form. Presumably peddled to the farm in it's dooryard by a true Yankee peddler, it had seen two decades of service before the Civil War and continued to serve for the rest of that century. When the farm became a summer place in the 1890's, the living sections of the home were modernized and the vestiges of the past 150 years were stored in the attic and out buildings. This box was retired to the attic w we found it. Good as found condition. The box is totally untouched as found and has the obvious & typical paint decoration loss, age toning, minor surface abrasions, scratches and edge wear. The tin eye for the lock on the front is lacking. The interior is attic soiled. We found this box open and pitched under the eves were a former sleuth had evidently tossed it after rifling it's contents. Right out of the attic, it has appropriate surface oxidation, wear and soiling for it's age and from it's old Maine estate residence. Please see photographs.
