This coin was recovered from the Shipwreck SS New York September 5, 1846: 161 years after an elegant, 160 foot, side wheel steamship foundered off the shores of Texas, its mysterious contents have been discovered and raised from the Gulf of Mexico. The S.S. New York was no ordinary steam ship. It's polished mahogany walls, white satin damask curtains, engraved silver, crystal, and fine white porcelain led one passenger to say that she felt like "Cleopatra" on board of a luxurious ship. However, the fate of this ship would be forever darkened beneath the surface of the gulf of Mexico. The ship set sail from Galveston, Texas at 4:00 p.m. on September 5th, 1846 with 53 passengers and crew on board. The ship's captain, John D. Phillips, charted the rough winds and fierce sea that first night out. After barely making 50 miles, the captain found his ship directly in the path of a major hurricane. Captain Phillips made the drop anchor order in an attempt to ride out the storm. By 2: 00 a.m. on September 7th, the gale force winds changed, forcing the ship to veer in the wrong direction. Despite the efforts of the crew to turn thes hip back into the wind, enormous waves barraged the ship, tearing apart the wheelhouse, smokestack and dousing the boilers. After hours of toil, the ship went down a short time later. Miraculously, 36 souls survived by hanging on to ship debris for two days until helped arrived. This rare coin has what they call a shipwreck effect. Its original quality has been altered due to the effect sea salt water has on silver. The coin was submerged under the waters of the Gulf of Mexico for more than 160 years!
