1842 Rhode Island stampless folded letter Written by former Rhode Island Governor in Newport Talks about HISTORIC DORR REBELLION !! Amazing Content, Expects Foreign Troop Invasion July 4! Historic Rhode Island stampless folded letter here !! This is a 1.5 page letter written June 13, 1842 by William Gibbs, the former Governor of Rhode Island and sent to William Schier, an attorney in Boston. Gibb's biography below. /wiki/William_C._Gibbs In this letter, Gibbs talks about the Dorr's Rebellion - in which Thomas Wilson Dorr started a brief armed insurrection in Rhode Island to protest the state's electoral system. For a period, his followers declared him to be the Governor - causing the real governor (Samuel Ward King) to call on President John Tyler to send federal troops (Tyler sent an observer but not troops." /wiki/Dorr_Rebellion Here is the text related to the rebellion: "my whole time has been occupied in the affairs on our state. We calculate on having an invasion of a foreign force the 1st July and we are preparing to give them a good reception. Dorr calculates to bring with him 5,000 troops and to plant his standards in Prove (Providence) on the 4th July..." The writer then references (I believe) the Governor of Connecticut whom they believe is supporting Dorr (think I got that right....) Rest of the letter is financial, referencing several names.
