Postal History Marvelous 2 page stampless folded letter written August 3, 1842 by Thompson Bailey in Stanford, Kentucky and sent to Dr. Walter Wade in care of A.B. Logan in Rodney, Mississippi. Wade was a prominent cotton plantation and slave owner in Port Gibson, not far inland from the river port of Rodney. Writer has just completed an eight day steamboat trip from Rodney aboard the steamer RAINBOW. He was delayed for two days in Frankfort waiting for a stage coach, but went to nearby Georgetown to visit friends. Gives names that you can research. Says money is very scarce and times are hard for Kentuckians - and compares Kentucky to Mississippi. Gives a crop report - presume cotton and or tobacco. Enlarged scans provided for your research benefit. Stationary mark is "Congress U.S." - tried to show on the scan. I don't see any postal markings on this one, and presume it was carried by a steamboat down river to Rodney and then carried to Port Gibson. Letter fully intact with some archival tape repairs. This is one of several letters from our Wade family letter acquisition. Walter Wade operated a cotton plantation near Rodney, Mississippi. He had strong family ties to South Carolina as well. He was a slave owner and a medical doctor, with ties to Philadelphia and the east coast. Quite a bit has been written about Dr. Wade (see link below) - in the Plantation Diaries of Dr. Wade of "Ross Wood" in Jefferson County, Mississippi. /documents/academic/upa_cis/10845_AnteBellSouthPlanSerN.pdf Terms $1.00 postage in the United States, and only $ 2.00 elsewhere.
