Postal History Marvelous 3 page stampless folded letter written February 22, 1843 by Lorenso Kingsley in Stanstead (Quebec) Canada and sent CROSS BORDER with a DERBY LINE, Vermont postmark to his lady friend Miss Cynthia E. Hayes in South Woodstock, Vermont. Kingsley talks about the MILLERITES holding meetings in anticipation of the end of the world (following the doomsday preachings of their founder William Miller - this came to be known as the Great Disappointment). He says the Millerite followers decided to stay in their meeting house through April, convinced the end of the world would still happened, but they finally dispersed. He talks about Mr. Marsh preaching - sounds like he was trying to convince the Millerites of the error in their beliefs.... Writer then talks about how sick everyone is in Stanstead, bad winter colds but he is able to continue working. He's found a house that he wants to buy, and wants Cynthia to pack her belongings and move to Canada. Sounds like a marriage proposal in this letter unless they were already engaged and he was just trying to find a place for them. I don't see any Canadian postmarks on this letter, just the Stanstead letter header and reference to Canada in the text. Postmark is a red DERBY LINE, Vt. CDS with a PAID 12 1/2 cent manuscript rate mark. So the letter was written in Canada and probably hand carried across the border where it was placed in the mails. Letter fully intact and in great shape Terms $1.00 postage in the United States, and only $ 2.00 elsewhere. We combine postage for multiple purchases. Postal insurance and registration extra.
