This rare hand-colored map is a copper-plate lithographic engraving, dating to 1843 by the respected German cartographer Conrad Malte-Brun. It represents the United Sstates. This rare map depicts an important phase in history when Mexico controlled much of what is today California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada and Texas. American Indian tribes and early cities like Santa Fe are clearly noted. The great region west of the Mississippi is largely unexplored and while many tribes are dentoed, the area is otherwise unexplored and labeled simply the Missouri Territory. This fine map is vividly hand-colored in outline form. Political boundaries as well as major rivers, territories, and counties are carefully labeled. Also included are major roads, trade routes, and many extant and proposed railroads. Further, all notable mountains, swamps, passes, and important trading centers are labeled. All text is in French. Each page exhibits its original press mark. Map is in good condition without age toning, foxing or tears. There is however a small and largely unnoticable ink stain dating to the original manufacture of the map in what is today Arizona/New Mexico. This stunning map is a copper plate lithograph which has been hand colored in wonderfully intense reds, greens, blues and yellows. The maps are based upon Malte-Brun's late 18th century cartographic studies and were published in Paris as the "Geographie Universal." This particular edition was revised and updated by French engraver J. J. N. Huot to the standards of 1843. The work of Malte-Brun was long known for its minimalist simplicity and rare accuracy.
