Postal History Terrific 3 page stampless folded letter penned January 18, 1844 by P.S. Hannah in Balcony Falls, Amherst County, Virginia and sent to his "dear Uncle" (same last name of Hannah) in Charlastone, Kanawha, Virginia. Writer is starting a new lumber and merchant store at Sneads Landing on the Kanawha river which he describes as a growing, wealthy neighborhood and he expects to do quite well in the new venture. They have two boats to transport goods and will provide some good employment. Talks about Captain Thomas Eubank passing through on the stage coach as he traveled to the south - seems to be a famous person based on the description, however he passed along at night so no one saw him. Then references the expected construction of the James River & Kanawha Canal which will allow folks to send their kids to schools in Lynchburg. Great letter with historic references! Full size scans provided for your research benefit. Postmark is is very seldom found Balcony Falls (Virginia) town manuscript and an 18 3/4 cents rate mark. Letter fully intact and in excellent condition. Also - almost forgot - this is written on pink stationary - relatively uncommon for this period (more expensive). Terms $1.00 postage in the United States, and only $ 2.00 elsewhere. We combine postage for multiple purchases. Postal insurance and registration extra.
