TITLE "Narrative of the United States Exploring Expedition. During the years 1838, 1839, 1840, 1841, 1842" By Charles Wilkes, U.S.N., Commander Of The Expedition, Member Of The American Philosophical Society, Etc. Published by Lea & Blanchard in 1845. Each volume is dated 1845 at base of title page, while cr page shows 1844, with no other printings or dates indicated. This set was originally published as five volumes, plus a sixth atlas volume. For sale is the complete five volumes of text, but the sixth, atlas volume is missing. Although I am not absolutely certain, I believe that this is the Second Edition, or the First Trade Edition, for the following reasons: The more common Third Edition was published in cloth, and was smaller- with 10 inch tall cover boards as opposed to the 11 inch tall boards of this set. Also, the Third Edition had woodcuts substituted for the steel "vignettes" in these volumes. Finally, the page counts in this set matches the other "First Trade" editions I found for sale on the net's bookselling services- Volume One: 434 pages; Volume Two: 476 pages; Volume Three: 438 pages; Volume Four: 539 pages; Volume Five: 558 pages. DESCRIPTION 5 volumes, full sheeps leather with 4 raised bands on the spines and gilt on black title plates on spines. 11 inches tall, 7.25 wide. Extensive b/w illustrations- 9 double page maps, 64 engraved plates, and numerous woodcut cut-ins. Double page, engraved maps titles are: "Paumotu Group", "Tahiti", "Somoan Group", "Australia And New South Wales", "Hawaiian Group" (Hawaiian Islands), "Western Groups, Pacific" (pacific Islands), "California" (actually Northern California), "Sooloo Sea", "Currents And Whaling-Grounds" (worldwide map of whale hunting areas). 's a random sampling of places from the CONTENTS: "Madeira- arrival at funchal, streets and modes of transport, criminals and prisons, character of the inhabitants, dress, dwelling, etc- Rio Negro- city of San Salvador, churches, geological character of the country, public garden, museum, Character of the Brazilians- constitution of the empire, ruling party, slavery, feelings toward foreigners, population, commerce, etc- Departure Of Porpoise, Whaleship, Height Of Waves, King Geoge's Island- Make The Coast Of Peru- anchor at San Lorenzo, deserters, court martial, road to Lima, houses, cathedral, market, corpus christi, treatment of slaves, etc- General Aspect of Tahiti- arrival and reception, survey of harbours, church at matavai, concourse of natives, courts of justice, queen and royal family, case of the catholic priests, dress of the two sexes, cookery and mode of eating, etc- Geographical Position Of The Somoan Group- climate, size of the islands, its quadrupeds, its birds, its reptiles, its fish, language of the natives, their general appearance, religion of the heathen, classes of samoan society, mode of government, etc- Extent Of The Seacoast Of Australia- history of new south wales, australian land company, convictship, value of convict labor, disposition of convicts on arrival, free emigrants, higher class of society, colonial rules and regulations, courts of law, education, etc- landing on an iceberg, Auckland Islands, Passage To New Zealand, Entrance Into The Feejee Group- arrival at levuka, rebellion against tanao, introduction of firearms, etc etc- Arrival Of The King At Honolulu- our visit to him, dwellings and gardens of the foreign residents, seamen's chapel, penal laws against catholics enacted, arrival of capt. laplace, written constitution of hawaii, ancient laws, succession to the throne, hawaiian mythology, dances, native physicians and medicine, etc etc (over 300 pages of vol iV is devoted to hawaii), Vancouver, Indians, Medicine Men, Washington, San Francisco, Manilla, Singapore, etc, etc, etc See photographs for moredetails.
