2-1/2 pgs letter, approx. 7-3/4" x 10", dated at Geneva, N.Y., Sept. 23, 1845, from Peter M. Dox, to Erastus Farnham, at Brookville, Steuben County, Indiana. Folded letter has red "GENEVA/N.Y." cds, red "PAID", and red "10" handstamps. The 1st sheet is a half page, as the top half had a draft payable to Farnham, which he removed in order to negotiate it - the letter is complete. A scarce autograph letter signed (ALS), of PETER M. DOX, (1813-1891), born in Geneva, N.Y., practiced law in Geneva; Moved to Alabama in 1856, where he was a Planter in Madison County, in the Huntsville area; Member of the Alabama State Constitutional Convention of 1865 , to form a new Constitution so Ala. could be readmitted to the Union after the Civil War, and served as a Union Democrat from Alabama in the U.S. Congress, 1869-1873 ; Died in Huntsville, Ala. His grandfather was the Virginia Congressman, John Nicholas, who served in Congress during the terms of Washington & Adams. An interesting letter concerning some land his ather owns in Indiana. Includes: "At the request of Abraham Dox, above I enclose you the Draft of Bank of Geneva, by its President, on H. Dwight, Jr., N.Y. City, for $23.88, that being the amount due for Taxes on his, my Father's land in Steuben Co., Ia. for 1845...You will please to acknowledge the rec't hereof at your earliest read more
