Postal History Amazing early ILLINOIS stampless folded letter here... a detailed 3 page letter written October 24, 1846 by John Wood in Albion, Illinois and sent to his friend John Ingle in Saundersville, Vandersburgh County, Pennsylvania. John gives a terrific, descriptive account of his travels around the Chicago area, Joliet in Will County, and up to Milwaukee. Gives distances, land descriptions, where they are staying in downtown Chicago with the Canal and Lake in sight, how the wind and waves crash agains the shore of Lake Michigan, travels (aboard steamboats), death of a child, bad sickness in the area, too many "slues" and swamps that spread disease, many epidemic deaths (presume cholera or yellow fever) in Joliet and they are afraid to travel there and much more. Just an incredible early Illinois pioneer letter. And.... wait there's more... look at the great postmarks on this letter. The Albion postmark is an irregular double oval... a VF strike too! Also a small arched PAID in black and manuscript 6 cent rate. Full size scans included for your research benefit! Letter fully intact and in excellent condition. Red wax seal remains for an impressive touch. Terms $1.00 postage in the United States, and only $ 2.00 elsewhere. We combine postage for multiple purchases. Postal insurance and registration extra.
