This folded lettersheet / stampless letter has a faint / partial circular date stamp for DUBUQUE Iowa DEC 5 [?], a 5 cents rate, and is addressed to Hon. Elisha Cutler, Jr., Secretary of State, Iowa City, Iowa, and is a one half a page letter on one page, then a small paragraph of writing on the next page, written by Geo. Nightingale, Clerk Bd Com's, Dubuque co., Iowa. The dateline is Dubuque December 14, 1847. There's an embossed county seal on the main page of writing, which was affixed over some kind of sealing wax. Some abstracts: "I, George Nightingale, Clerk of the Board of Commissioners of the county of Dubuque, in the State of Iowa do certify the enumeration of all the white inhabitants of all ages in the County of Dubuque to be Seven Thousand four hundred and forty .... made to me by Benjamin F. Davis, Assessor of said county for the year 1847." The letter has wear / tear / stains / many separations along the folds, most of which were mended with archival tape, in order to hold it together. As usual with stampless letters, after writing on one or more sides of a sheet of paper, the letter was folded several times and mailed. Please note that most stampless letters have faults such file folds, tears at and opposite the sealing wax area, and some stains / wear / tear here and there.
