This neat 1847 stampless folded letter was sent from Fort Gibson Arkansas which was actually post office operating in the Indian Territory of Oklahoma. Fort gibson was an early US militay fort on the "western frontier". This letter is written by Lieutenant Colonel Gustavus Loomis who was the coomanding officer at Fort Gibson. Loomis was born in Thetford Vermont and entered the US Military Academy in 1808 and graduates in 1811 (he ranked 10th out of 19 students). He served in the War of 1812 and participated in the capture of Fort George in Canada and he was later taken prisoner when Fort Niagara was surpisingly captured. Overall this is a very nice item and somewhat scarce. He later was very active in the Indian Wars. He was stationed at Fort Crawford in Wisconsin and participated in the Black Hawk War when Chief Black Hawk led an uprising. Loomis served in Florida and participated in the two Seminole Wars. During his tenute in the military he a stationed at Flort GAdsin in Florida, Fort Crawford in Wisconsin, Fort Snellings, Fort Towson, Fort Gibson and Jefferon Barracks in St Louis. He was made a Lieutenant Colonel in the Sixth Infantry in 1840 (he signed this letter with that title). In April of 1844 he took command of Fort Gibson.
