Postal History Historic and amazing early stampless folded letter written October 22, 1847 by William Burket (or a close spelling) in SHERMAN, TEXAS and sent to Clement Grubb in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Writer talks rather extensively about early SHERMAN, how they are not yet influenced by politics (Grayson County), but forming a county, bringing in lawyers and experts from other parts of the state, working with the Governor and State Legislature, but he says its basically every man for himself and every man owns a rifle, he says they do have some problems with folks drinking too much alcohol, and sobriety, and giving liquor to Indians, talks about the hot weather, but corn crops good... makes some comparisons to Lancaster County. More study will definitely reward you. There are three full pages. I can't tell if this is a complete letter or not. It seems to be, and plenty to read and study. This would be a gold mine for a Texas history buff ! I should probably take more time to research this one, and transcribe it... but will leave the fun up to the winning bidder. Early Texas stampless folded letters are tough to come by - and this one has such historic content. Sherman's post office was formed in 1847 - so this is EARLY use !! ASCC also lists 1847 as the earliest use. Postmark is a Sherman, Texas manuscript town with a bold 10 cents manuscript rate mark. Letter in great shape, and red wax seal remains for a nice touch. Terms $1.00 postage in the United States, and only $ 2.00 elsewhere. We combine postage for multiple purchases. Postal insurance and registration extra.
