Over 165 Years Old! 1848: Gives Official Church Position on Slavery The Doctrines and Discipline of the Methodist Episcopal Church New York: Published by Lane & Scott, 1848 ~~Joseph Longking, Printer~~ ************************************** 16mo. 218 pages. Binding measures 5 inches tall by about 3 inches wide. The leather binding shows rubbing and wear. The hinges are starting to crack, and the corners are bumped. A prior (modern) owner has written an inscription on the front flyleaf in either Chinese or Japanese as well as "Hyde Park". There is a brown stain on the title page going through to the following leaves and some foxing in the text. The text block itself is sound. Of historical interest is the final "chapter", which covers about one page. This is the church's stance on slavery, a hot topic in 1848. The church officially condemned it and stated that "no slaveholder shall be eligible to any official station in our Church hereafter...." It also states that "Our colored preachers and offical members shall have all the privileges which are usual to othes in the district and quaterly conferences, where the usages of teh country do not forbid it."
