I have here for sale a RARE set of all three volumes of The British Colonies their history, extent, condition and resources by R Montgomery Martin, formerly Treasure of Hong Kong and member of Her Majesty's Legislative Council in China. Published by Tallis in 1849 - no date shown on the title page but the Foreword is dated August 1849. All of the bindings are tight and firm - no loose boards. Vol I - xxiv, 744 pages British North America, Austral-Asia - 12 full plates including Captain Cook and Joseph Banks, Nelson and John Locke. Vol II - Islands in the Southern Pacific 1-384 British Possessions in Africa 1-208 6 plates Vol III British Possessions in the West Indies and in Southern and Central America 1-188 British Possessions in Asia 1-564 11 plates 10.5" by 8". Three quarter bound in brown leather on marbled boards, five raised bands on the spine, marbled end papers. I am surprised that there is no section on China and Hong Kong, seeing as Martin worked there, but the set appears complete. If you have any information about a section on China please let me know and I will amend the listing to read 'Incomplete' but as far as I can see this set appears complete.
