You are bidding on a super rare 159 year old genuine antique hand colored map of the above region and year from the extremely rare 1849 edition of the Mitchell Universal Atlas. SA Mitchell was one of the pre-eminent American map publishers in the mid-19th Century. The 1849 edition is now almost impossible to find and sells for around $7,000 and higher, so this map and price is a great deal unless you want to purchase a whole atlas. Publisher: Samuel Agustus Mitchell the elder began his map publishing career in the early 1830s. Having worked as a school teacher, Mitchell was frustrated with the low quality and inaccuracy of school texts of the period. His first maps were an attempt to rectify this problem. In the next 20 years Mitchell would become the most prominent American map publisher of the mid 19th century. In 1846 Mitchell teamed up with Cowperthwait and Desilver to produce the Mitchellâe(tm)s Universal Atlas and the Mitchellâe(tm)s General Atlas . In 1860 Mitchell ceded his cartographic empire to his son of the same name. Mitchell Junior continued in his fatherâe(tm)s tradition, producing fine American atlases well into the late 1880s. This map is NOT a copy or reproduction and is an original antique map from the year shown. General Description: 1. This stunning map is a steel plate lithograph displays original hand coloring in wonderfully intense colors. It is noteworthy because of its vivid hand coloration and precise engraving, as well as for its size and detail. Indeed, Mitchellâe(tm)s maps are among the largest and most colorful 19th century maps ever made. Mitchell maps are also especially admired for their wide decorative borders, which, in their rugged detail, express something of the American Frontier spirit. Political boundaries as well as individual regions/counties and shows towns, roads, railways, rivers, lakes, bays, harbors, islands and other important places. 2. The map is in almost fine/excellent condition considering the age of the map. The overall size of the map sheet is very large at approximately 17 inches by 13 inches. The map is far more beautiful than my pictures show. This map will look wonderful when matted and framed and will be a great addition to your collection. 3. The map is a 100% orignal and genuine antique map. - I do not sell copies. The map looks far nicer than my pictures show. Other eBay sellers are selling copies, so please do not be fooled. 4. Full gallery value is many times my asking price. 5. Why am I selling my maps at low prices??? - because for years I have been selling off my entire collection on eBay. They are compelling objects that instantly grab peopleâe(tm)s attention and transport them to a different time and place. Owning an antique map is much like owning a window into the past. An antique map can be a veritable passage back in time, allowing one to imagine the world much as the mapmaker himself did 100, 200 or even 300 years ago! These are great collectibles not only for their decorative and art value but as a financial investment as well. Remember, these are becoming more rare everyday as collectors purchase them, and of course they are not making the atlases any longer, so purchase a map while they are still affordable. All of my maps are investment grade and collectible quality. The value of this original will only increase over time. Many people are now starting to offer cheap reproductions/copies.
