Antique small homemade & handmade cobbler's bench drawer with it's original hand fitted dovetail joins, it's original divided compartment interior, it's original under bench drawer slides still present, it's original all square nail construction, it's original old green painted drawer fronts and retaining it's original dry, age toned and lightly soiled surface, as found. Maine , 1850's. Guaranteed old and original; this is not a fake or reproduction. Actual weight 2 1/2 lbs. 11 7/8" deep by 8 5/8" wide by 3 1/8" tall. We continue our listings from the Montville, Maine, estate and continue listing primitives we found in the woodshed, an attached building that had become a catch-all storage repository for âe¦Maine farm primitivesâe¦ beginning in the 1920's. Obsolete wood and farm wooden items were put in the shed with the firewood to, evidently, be burned. They never burned them and although t was a lot of "scrap wood", some of the things we found are pretty nice. Hoped we'd run out of the woodshed found listings? We have not nor are we near exhausting the listing from this estate. Thank you for your continuing interest. This is actually a desirable and often missing part to a classic and popular "antique"; the New England cobbler's bench. This is a drawer, for holding small nails and pegs, from a cobbler's bench. These drawers were hung from the underside of the bench and could be accessed from both sides. Generally they were used from the "front side" and this one has an added wood strip at it's bottom front to make pulling it out easier. As it is and as found in the woodshed, the cast away draw is a charming display of casual woodworking. Primitive, it is assembled and held together with a variety of dovetail joins and square nails. The interior compartment edge tops are worn down from hands and fingers extracting nails for decades. The original drawer slides show that the drawer has been separated from the bench for a very long time. The heavy weight of the whole drawer proves it's intended rugged usage. It has beautiful deep age toned color from long usage and then long woodshed storage. We never find these cobbler's bench drawers but sure have seen a lot of benches missing them over the years. They just slid out so were easily lost when a bench was picked up and moved. This is actually a rare object in addition to it being very attractive as a primitive. It has a lot of decorative potential and will always retain it's true heritage. Very good as found condition. T is nothing wrong with the cobbler's bench drawer except that it, long ago, lost it's cobbler's bench. Otherwise the scarce survival is in perfect original condition with it's original undisturbed surface, as found. Right out of the woodshed it has appropriate surface oxidation, wear and soiling for it's age and from it's old Maine farm residence. Please see photographs.
