US MODEL 1850 FOOT OFFICERS' SWORD & SCABBARD CIVIL WAR AMES MANUFACTURING COMPANY , CHICOPEE , MASSACHUSETTS You are bidding on a US Model 1850 Foot Officers Sword and Sheath . The scabbard is marked " AMES MFG CO CHICOPEE MASS " , is 32" long & weighs 1 pound , 10 ounces . The sword is intricately etched on both sides with " U.S. " on one side measures 36" total and weighs 1 pound 14 ounces . I could find no other markings upon the sword although I looked very thoroughly , especially on the blade just above the hilt . It is most likely that the markings there but are illegible due to wear and / or light surface rust . I am happy to look for any markers / identifiers any knowledgeable collectors could point me towards . I am selling this for a family member and welcome any questions , comments or details anybody can offer regarding this piece . Condition : the metal piece that would protect the user's hand while gripping the sword is well attached but loose . There is some light surface rust on this same part as well as on the blade extending no more than 1" beyond the hilt . The are some scratches near the end of the blade extending no further than 2" from the tip . There are some nicks to the " business side " of the blade from use , and it is still reasonable sharp . The scabbard's black areas are chipped , as evidenced in the photos accompanying photos , with some small dings to the tip . The sword does not fit the scabbard down to the hilt - whether this is due to the aforementioned dings , sediment at the end of the scabbard or some other reason is not known . All items are shipped within 1 business day of receiving cleared funds from the buyer . Please note that the sword does fit the scabbard down to the hilt . This is how this item was first found . However , it was difficult to remove and I would not recommend forcing it all the way in again to avoid possible damage to the sword . As is , about 1" of the sword remains outside of the scabbard without forcing the rest in . Side-by-side they are a perfect match . There is no reason to doubt that the scabbard is original to the sword based on this info .
