This is an exceptionally nice, and somewhat unusual 1850 Militia NCO sword and scabbard. It is in BEAUTIFUL condition, as well as having features that are both early and unusual. This is a classic sword from the period of the Civil War . You can find it as Peterson's NO. 11. This has the shield shaped langet, and an oval blade, so is almost certainly military. The plain oval blade is 26 inches long. The sword is 32 inches long out of the scabbard. It is as tight as a drum, and shows no signs of ever having been apart. The scabbard is black leather, with silver plated bras mounts. It is also in exceptional condition. The throat is a little loose on the scabbard body. What makes this sword particularly interesting and attractive is that the mounts are apparently heavily silver plated. The scabbard throat is obvious, but when I bought it, it took me a while to realize that the pommel and crossguard are as well. They are quite dark with tarnish, and I assumed that they were brass, but then noticed that the ends of the guard show through with very heavy silver. I have not tried to remove the tarnish, as many collectors want every bit of that original patina, but as far as I can tell, the silver plate remains complete underneath the very heavy tarnish.
