You are bidding on a very beautiful engraved and rare 100% original and authentic hand colored antique map of the above region and printed in the above year from an 1850 Mitchell Universal Atlas. Mitchell was one of the pre-eminent American map publishers in the mid-19th Century. These atlas are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Complete atlases are currently being offered at antiquarian bookstores at prices that can range between $3,500 to $5,000, so I believe that the opening bid of only $99.00 is a great deal for you. This is NOT a copy or reproduction and is an original from 1850!! Publisher: Samuel Agustus Mitchell the elder began his map publishing career in the early 1830s. Having worked as a school teacher, Mitchell was frustrated with the low quality and inaccuracy of school texts of the period. His first maps were an attempt to rectify this problem. In the next 20 years Mitchell would become the most prominent American map publisher of the mid 19th century. In 1847 Mitchell teamed up with Cowperthwait and Desilver to produce the Mitchell's Universal Atlas and the Mitchell's General Atlas .
