Open pontil base. See Barlow # 4032. We continue in the matron's dining room and upon her dining table. She had this classic pair of Sandwich petal & loop candlesticks flanking her Clevenger Brother's bowl that we have also just listed. Appropriate to her room setting, traditional as refined New England dining table embellishment, popular without equivalence and amplified "good taste" it should not be a surprise to any that the matron "had a pair of these". We were not surprised at all. For those new to these, this.. pair of old glass candlesticksâe¦ is a pleasing, classic and traditional New England glass masterpiece. "Canary" in flint glass goes with the "dark blue" of soft paste Staffordshireâe¦ in proper New England homesâe¦ w neither are for sale and all were "passed down through the family". Collector exuberance and infighting namby-pamby has diminished the traditional roll of these candlesticks. Foolishly, the collecting community spends the most time notifying that they "have those" "only mine are (exceptional color variant of choice)". They place their appreciation on collector rarity one-upmanship and âe¦the historic context of the canary color candlesticks are lost. We who tread in the back door of the Maine homesteads know "we don't find these" but in the "right homes". It is in the FRONT DOOR of a subtle message sending roomâe¦ after room of âe¦subdued understated traditional New England Puritanical âe¦old moneyâe¦ well bredâe¦ properly educatedâe¦ quietâe¦ stay out of any limelightâe¦ family very never mentioned anywâe¦ traditional âe¦private estates that includes dark blue soft pasteâe¦ that these are found. FOUND means they were NOT collected but: "Of course they are Sandwich you fool my grandmother told me that" and HER grandmotherâe¦ bought them whenâe¦ "they were made". THAT is what one is REALLY seeing That is why the "canary" pair was on the matron's dining table: GREAT, GREAT, GREAT Grandmother says "I like that color" to "go with my china". They are a simple & popular tradition of defining New England good taste. The old families kept them, used them, broke one of them and "gave that (remaining single) to the church (sale)". If they didn't break them the pair remains in the home, on display as in this estate or in the cupboard. Nothing is ever said about them except âe¦very, very, very occasionallyâe¦ they might be "shown" by a grandmother to a granddaughterâe¦ in the one sided on-going effort to "get her" "pointed in the right direction". If one does not get this; does not believe it, does not believe IN it and generally thinks these pieces of old glass are "ugly" âe¦ it is best to âe¦take oneself off the list. So to speak. IF one wants to put one's foot in that door; a very properly painted white door with old iron hardwareâe¦ and may even still find what is being discussed a little daunting, WE PROMISE that we are NOT STEERING WRONG for with this single pair of "old candlesticks" the statement is very clearly made to those that know and throw in the "from my grandmother" or from "HIS" grandmother andâe¦ DONE. One needs no other pair of candlesticks. We state again that this pair of candlesticks in this canary color are a classic and traditional New England glass masterpiece. Very good as...
