Postal History Amazing content in this 3.5 page stampless folded letter written with a quaker date of 6 mo 3 1850 (June 3, 1850) by "Enoch" in St Louis, Missouri and sent to James F. Sperron "of Phila (Philadelphia) in care of Foster & Fogg (merchants) in Nashville, Tennessee. Enoch writes about his journey upriver to St Louis, took a two week horse & buggy excursion, and then describes in graphic detail how a negro woman and a white man were hanged. The negro woman tried to kill a while woman by hitting her with an axe while she slept but the white woman survived. The investigators essentially torchured the black woman by hanging her and then obtained a confession and she said a white man (I think her lover) was involved (I think the husband of the white woman....) so the towns folks decided to hang both the black woman and the white man together - they were strung up by rope from a tree, placed in a wagon that was driven out from under them.... you get the picture. A grisly but historic letter here. Shows the lack of formal law and justice in Missouri in the 1850s. Writer goes on to say he is soon heading north to Chicago. Enlarged scans provided for your research benefit. Postmark is a red St Louis CDS with enclosed 10 cent rate mark. Letter fully intact and in great shape. Terms $1.00 postage in the United States, and only $ 2.00 elsewhere. We combine postage for multiple purchases. Postal insurance and registration extra.
