1850s Abolitionist Gamaliel Bailey Letters - One re John C Fremont - Quotable Gamaliel Bailey (1807-1859) - American journalist; abolitionist. As a newsman Bailey was the subject of violent mob attacks at his Cincinnati and Wash. DC offices. Editor of the National Era, an abolitionist publication in Washington DC. In 1851-1852 it published Uncle Tom's Cabin by Stowe in serialized form. He died at sea in 1859 while on a trip to Europe. Small but intriguing archive of three items: An 1853 als; partial letter signed, with excellent 1850s content re John C. Fremont; and letter of Elizabeth Ellicott Pike (wife of James S. Pike) to Bailey's wife Margaret. 1. Letter Re John C. Fremont ca 1850s letter, 1 1/4pp signed G Bailey, partial only but excellent and candid content about John C. Fremont. It appears to have been written during the 1856 US presidential campaign. [Fremont ran as candidate of the new Republican party.] In part: "At one time they referred of me as favoring Fremont...Indeed some letter writer has reported that I gave a dinner to Fremont. Know Nothingism has trained them in their school of lying."; "As to Fremont you know him. He is an amiable, honorable gentle man, with a gift for exploration and adventure - but without knowledge of politics, political men, or the nature & aim of our movement.
