1850s Vintage Coin Silver Gorham Hand Chased Basket Presented is a beautifully crafted, pure coin silver basket, probably a sugar basket, made by the Gorham Manufacturing Company. This piece was made in the mid-1800s. This is Gorham's earliest hallmark. The whole piece is hand chased with gorgeous scrolls, flowers and leaves. T is a great crest of a boar's head on one side and a monogram of the letter S in a Gothic script on the other side. The body is raised on four ornate, leaf form feet and the hinged handle is beautifully cast in a decorative, openwork style. A superb piece of American coin silver. The underside is marked with the Gorham hallmark and pure coin. In this particular hallmark the lion faces to the left. Gorham only used a left facing lion from the late 1840s to approximately 1865. It has been my experience that the left facing hallmark was rarely used, if ever, after 1861. This piece was certainly made in the 1850s, and stylistically it certainly dates from the 1850s. This piece is in excellent condition and the designs are crisp, despite its age. T are no dents, no breaks, no splits, no monogram removals and no repairs. T is a small amount of tarnish that is visible in the photos. This tarnish is very light and can easily be polished off. The basket measures 4 by 6 1/4 inches and weighs 305 grams or 10.7 ounces. This piece has both nice size and good weight.
