Original 1851 Great Exhibition Prize Medal for Superior Workmanship Class XXVII. Awarded to Chatwin & Sons ( John Chatwin ) of Birmingham for a collection of ' Black & White Pearl Buttons. The description of the work can be found in Class XXII ' Pearl Work '. In the directory he is recorded as " John Chatwin manufacturer of Pearl Buttons, etc. Great Charles Street, Birmingham ". Makers marks on the medal are W.Wyon R.A. - Royal Mint and on the other side Leonard C.Wyon Des: & Sc: - Royal Mint London 1851. The medal is in excellent condition with some minor marks / blemishes. It measures 3 inches diam. and 9/32 of an inch thick. The medal weighs 302 grams ( with box 364 grams ). The hinges on the box are broken but repairable. Both securing clips at the front are in place. There are scuffs on the outside of the box. The end part of the blue ribbon is missing The box measures 4.25 x 4.25 inches.
