1851 Falls of St Anthony, Minnesota Territory stampless folded letter Written by prominent minister and abolitionist Falls of St Anthony in Hennepin County Writers about church growth, building structure Winter stops navigation on Mississippi River Sent to Home Missionary Society in New York City Awesome early MINNESOTA postal history find ! This is a wonderful and detailed 3 page stampless folded letter written November 22, 1851 by a prominent early Hennepin County minister and abolitionist, Charles Seccomb at the "Falls of St Anthony" and sent to the Rev Milton Badger at the Home Mission Society in New York City. Seccomb starts by saying due to the winter close of navigation on the Mississippi River, it will take about a month for his letter to arrive. He has recently arrived in Minnesota, and talks about the tough challenges of starting a congregation, removing obstances of prejudice, he says the basement foundation of his church is almost complete and in the spring he hopes the structure will be ready for worship. He asks Badger to continue funding his ministry, and asks that money for his salary be sent to George W. Campbell & Co (merchant) in Galena, Illinois. I found this link referencing the Rev Seccomb: /books?id=lVGGlRF5v3wC&pg=PR25&lpg=PR25&dq=charles+seccombe+st+anthony+minnesota&source=bl&ots=MBb8HOX4YH&sig=upfMI13OQjOEA1oe8piEtMSzhWY&hl=en&ei=HzC9TeHWIITdgQe325i5BQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&sqi=2&ved=0CBkQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=charles%20seccombe%20st%20anthony%20minnesota&f=false Enlarged scans provided so you can research further. Postmark is a nice red St Anthony Falls, MIN. circular date stamp with red PAID hand stamp and accompanying manuscript "Paid". I don't see a rate mark but presume it was 3 cents. Also presume this went via steamboat down the Mississippi River to St Louis, then up the Ohio River. Letter fully intact and in excellent condition. Written on nice blue stationary. Dealer price on this rare letter was $175.00 ! We are offering at our normal LOW start bid of $ 9.50. Terms $1.00 postage in the United States, and only $ 2.00 elsewhere. We combine postage for multiple purchases. Postal insurance and registration extra. We're members of the American Philatelic Society.
