You are bidding on a very beautiful genuine antique hand colored map of the above region and year from a Mitchell Atlas. SA Mitchell was one of the pre-eminent American map publishers in the mid-19th Century. Publisher: Samuel Agustus Mitchell the elder began his map publishing career in the early 1830s. Having worked as a school teacher, Mitchell was frustrated with the low quality and inaccuracy of school texts of the period. His first maps were an attempt to rectify this problem. In the next 20 years Mitchell would become the most prominent American map publisher of the mid 19th century. In 1846 Mitchell teamed up with Cowperthwait and Desilver to produce the MitchellÃ¢ÂeÂ(tm)s Universal Atlas and the MitchellÃ¢ÂeÂ(tm)s General Atlas . In 1860 Mitchell ceded his cartographic empire to his son of the same name. Mitchell Junior continued in his fatherÃ¢ÂeÂ(tm)s tradition, producing fine American atlases well into the late 1880s. This map is NOT a copy or reproduction and is an original antique map from the year shown. General Description: 1. This stunning map displays original hand coloring in wonderfully intense colors. It is noteworthy because of its vivid hand coloration and precise engraving, as well as for its size and detail. Indeed, MitchellÃ¢ÂeÂ(tm)s maps are among the largest and most colorful 19th century maps ever made. Political boundaries as well as individual regions/counties and shows towns, roads, railways, rivers, lakes, bays, harbors, islands and other important places. 2. The map is in excellent condition considering the age of the map. The overall size of the map sheet is approximately 9 inches by 11 inches. The map is far more beautiful than my pictures show. This map will look wonderful when matted and framed and will be a great addition to your collection. 3. The map is a 100% orignal and genuine antique map. - I do not sell copies.
