Autograph letter signed, "Real Hallowell", New York, April 27, 1852, 1 1/2p., 8" x 10", with integral postally sent cover addressed to [Captain] Levi B. Gillchrist Thomaston, Maine. Handwritten in ink; spelling somewhat rough. Hallowell writes regarding an unavoidable accident involving a ship. It appears as if Gilchrist was the owner or manager, and the ship was captained by Hallowell. He mentions $4,000 in repairs, unsatisfactory rigging and most interestingly, "I have unfortunately been detained in qarrentein [quarantine]...on acct of the small pox being on board." Condition: Overall VG. Shipping: $2.00 First Class s/h. US only. Thank you.
