1852 PG$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-146, Pollock-174, R.8, PR65 PCGS. The obverse features a line design, described as a circle of six bows by early catalogers, around the central perforation. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around, with 1852 below. The reverse consists of the denomination DOLLAR above and an open wreath below. Struck on an annular silver planchet with a plain edge. While Judd-146 is technically an R.7 issue, its actual availability deserves an R.8 rating. This circumstance is because no less than five examples of Judd-146 have been impounded in museum collections. This issue is less available today than it was circa 1890, before Byron Reed, J.C. Mitchelson, and B. Peyton donated their advanced collections to various institutions. Early pattern collectors were familiar with the issue, and R.C. Davis listed it as number 74 in his pioneering work on patterns. An early auction appearance of Judd-146 was in the R.C. Davis Collection (New York Coin & Stamp, 1/1890), lot 1032. In recent times, a search of auction records has uncovered only three appearances in the last 32 years. The devices are strongly impressed, with a high wire rim above the date on the inner perforation. Pristine surfaces, with light champagne toning.
