RARE original DODGE'S LITERARY MUSEUM� journal, dated April 23, 1853. COMPLETE in 16 pgs, 4to (13 3/4” x 10 1/4”). IN FINE CONDITIONFeatured in this issue is the FULL COLUMN-LENGTH+ correspondence article "LETTER FROM CALIFORNIA" (Murphys, CA), dated March 8th, 1853.A sample of the correspondence reads, "...Murphy's is the name of a large mining camp, situated in the southern mining district, twenty-five miles south of the Mokelumne, and five miles north of the Stanislaus rivers. The diggings here were first discovered early in 1849, by on John Murphy (from whom the town derives its name, and from that time to the present day it has been steadily growing in importance, until it is now one of the most flourishing and populous towns in the mining region...We have here a resident population of about two thousand.
