Postal History Awesome early North Carolina postal history find here.... a very detailed 3+ page stampless folded letter written September 1, 1853 by Lucy Wiatt with a letter header of LEWIS MINE and a postmark of Oakville, North Carolina -- and sent to her niece Miss Susan E Webber in Potosi, Washington County, Missouri. Letter gives fascinating insights into their pioneer life, talking extensively about raising chickens, the types they raise including a fancy new breed in the region called Shanghai fowl, also talks of religious activity - Universalists, Mormons and writer describes herself as a "regular double twisted old Methodist...." - she references friends and family in Potosi and many interesting life & times things to read in this great letter ! Enlarged scans provided for your research - we really just skimmed this one so more study will no doubt reward you. Postmark is a manuscript Oakville (NC) with a PAID 3 cent rate mark.
