Antique hand assembled silver plated stamped brass & cast iron sewing bird, patent dated 1853 on it's pin cushion cup, in good working order and retaining it's original old dry surface. After a brief hiatus, we continue listing from the Black Point estate. For those who have been following these listings, we thank you for your patience and continued interest. We expect to complete the listings from this estate prior to Columbus Day weekend and will begin a new estate in mid October . We found this especially sturdy, larger and well made mid 19th Century sewing clamp in the attic of the main house. Old sewing clamps, notably the bird shaped "sewing birds", have always been respected and appreciated by all with an antiquarian interest. This specimen's high quality is acutely attractive. The stamped brass bird has splendid & classic Victorian form. Stylized but not cute or stereotypical, this creation is a singular fashionable Victorian expression that, as a sewing accessory, is a refined & archetypal expression of Victorian decoration at it's best. The art eye may need to step back a step and take a more careful review to find just how well done this... Victorian masterpiece... actually is. Too many "everyone likes these" standards have been piled on the sewing bird's daily antiquarian heritage and a fresh look to embrace it's actually very fine art divination is in order. The sewing bird is one of the great success stories of American Victorian art and this one is particularly fine. The thick & heavy cast steel clamp and shaft supports a once fully silver plated rugged stamped brass bird. A strong steel spring is compressed between the two section of the bird. A vase shaped & patent dated stamped pin cushion cup rises from the birds back. Superior actual usage wear to the silver plate proves the long and true sewer's handling while the superior quality of the whole bird preserved it in perfect working order. The tight gripping beak, firm original spring, robust & natural usage polished steel clamp and pleasing heft of the whole sewing bird alert the antiquarian to the refined quality of this particular sewing bird. Very good as found condition. The green velvet fabric of the pin cushion is an old homemade replacement of the original velvet fabric cushion. It has been in place a long time and has edge wear & full age toning to the fabric. Again noting the wear to the silver plate on the stamped brass bird as a positive & attractive feature, the sewing bird is in fine as found condition. Right out of the attic it has appropriate surface oxidation, wear and soiling for it's age and from it's old Maine estate residence. Please see photographs. As found this past March in an estate in Black Point , Maine . Seeking things fresh found in attics? Please see our other listings from this estate. This was in the main house. We have done nothing to it at all; it is just as we found it. It looks like good one to us! We offer this 1853 Victorian sewing bird clamp for $4.99 NR..
